Η ονομασία Μετέωρα είναι νεότερη και δεν αναφέρεται από τους αρχαίους συγγραφείς. Το όνομά τους το οφείλουν στον Άγιο Αθανάσιο τον Μετεωρίτη, κτήτορα της μονής της Μεταμόρφωσης του Σωτήρος (Μεγάλο Μετέωρο), ο οποίος ονόμασε έτσι τον «πλατύ λίθο›, στον οποίο ανέβηκε για πρώτη φορά το 1344. Σύμφωνα με την επικρατούσα άποψη, οι πρώτοι αναχωρητές εγκαταστάθηκαν στην περιοχή το 12 αι. Στα μέσα του 14ου αι. ο μοναχός Νείλος συγκέντρωσε τους μοναχούς που ζούσαν απομονωμένοι σε σπηλιές των βράχων, γύρω από την σκήτη της Δούπιανης οργανώνοντας έτσι τον μοναχισμό στα Μετέωρα.

Τα Μετέωρα αποτελούν, μετά το Άγιο ΄Ορος, το μεγαλύτερο και με συνεχή παρουσία από την εποχή της εγκατάστασης των πρώτων ασκητών μέχρι σήμερα μοναστικό σύνολο στον ελλαδικό χώρο.

Από τις ιστορικές μαρτυρίες συμπεραίνουμε ότι οι μονές των Μετεώρων ήταν στο σύνολό τους τριάντα. Από τις τριάντα αυτές μονές οι έξι λειτουργούν έως σήμερα και δέχονται πλήθος προσκυνητών. Υπάρχουν όμως και πολλά μικρότερα μοναστήρια εγκαταλελειμμένα. Τα περισσότερα από αυτά είχαν ιδρυθεί στον 14ο αιώνα.

The first monks of Meteora arrived back in the 14th century establishing the Meteora monasteries on top giant cliffs. They chose to do this not because it was easy but because it was hard, almost impossible. And they succeeded in this great achievement to build them through their great faith. The monks separated themselves from this world; fleeing into the deserts, crossing the seas, climbing on steep and high mountains.

They stop at nothing in their everlasting desire to witness the Divine Light; to experience the presence of God in their hearts. The monasteries remain till present day the memorials of a glorious past, a long forgotten empire that defended the Eastern Christian world for over 1000 years. Humble men lived suspended for centuries between the heavens and earth, perched on the edge of sharp cliffs, glorifying God for He made the earth and heavens by His power. Men of faith came and curved the rocks and conquered the mountains, creating temples in the Holy Monasteries of Meteora for the worship of God!

They have left their homes, the riches and pleasures of this world in order to grow old in these nests and caves of this earth, to suffer from cold and hunger, pain and death, perhaps to honor God in this way…
