A Pilgrim’s Guide to Mount Athos

είσαι προσκυνητής ή επισκέπτης εκεί. Επίσης, πληροφορίες που χρειάζεται κατά την
σχεδίαση του ταξιδιού, όπως τι γραφειοκρατία απαιτείται για να γίνει δεκτή η είσοδός του
και πως θα φτάσει ως εκεί, καθώς και πληροφορίες που είναι απαραίτητες κατά την
υλοποίηση της επίσκεψης, όπως η φιλοξενία στα μοναστήρια, οι λειτουργικοί ρυθμοί και
τα ωράριά τους, οι βιβλιοθήκες και οι άλλοι θησαυροί τους, η φωτογράφηση και το
κολύμπι, η δυνατότητα παράτασης της παραμονής, ακόμα και οι αποστάσεις μεταξύ των
μοναστηριών.

All visitors to Mount Athos are by definition pilgrims. Whatever your reason for visiting them, the monks will welcome you as a pilgrim. Guiding pilgrims is one of the oldest activities of the Friends of Mount Athos. Just as the proskynetaria — personal pilgrimage accounts written by pilgrims from the middle ages to early modern times — guided the pilgrims of the past, so also the FoMA Guide provides today’s pilgrims with advice and understanding based on the experience of fellow pilgrims. Unlike those venerable pilgrims’ books, however, this Pilgrims’ Guide is updated constantly.

Monastery Reservation Form

As a service to those planning pilgrimages to the Holy Mountain, and because reservations are now required at most of the individual monasteries, FoMA has prepared a downloadable bilingual (Greek and English) Monastery Reservation Form.

In making your reservations you are asked to bear in mind that many of the monasteries have only a small brotherhood and they are often overwhelmed by the number of requests that they receive. Please exercise patience and understanding if you do not receive an immediate reply.

Download and print a copy of the reservation form for each monastery that you plan to visit, fill out the required information, and either mail or fax it to those monasteries.

Bureaucracy

Mount Athos needs to protect its seclusion, without which it would lose its raison d’être. For this reason it has to impose strict entry regulations. The bureaucracy may at first glance appear formidable; and so it is. The regulations are also subject to change, often at short notice. The present online version of the Pilgrim’s Guide is regularly updated to keep abreast of changes as they occur.

Athonite pilgrimage is recommended for many purposes, not least as one of the best ways to relieve stress. The better informed the pilgrim is, the less stressful his pilgrimage will be, and the more chance he has to achieve spiritual refreshment. In our experience the following procedure is a reasonably sure way to gain entry with a minimum of stress.
